As a food service and access organization, any significant changes in food cost heavily impact Moveable Feast. In 2022, the cost of producing our medically tailored meals increased by almost $200,000. "Food is extremely hard to get right now," says our Director of Food Services, Demetrius Sanders, who works tirelessly to ensure the food we purchase for clients meets their dietary needs. Nearly 70% of Moveable Feast clients live at or below the Federal Poverty Limit and manage multiple illnesses. Isabel Betancourt, a staff Dietitian, shares, "Inflation has hit our low and fixed-income clients the most, as the price of most basic living expenses is higher than ever. I have a list of healthy, affordable foods for clients to keep at home as "emergency" food - like eggs, oats, canned meats, beans, or frozen veggies - but now even some of these foods are outside of our client's budget." Our clients rely on us to deliver their meals each week, alleviating some of the stress associated with managing serious illness with limited resources. "At Moveable Feast, we believe in the power of food and community, coming together to feed people, fight disease, and foster hope," says Sue Elias about the importance of community fundraisers. Your work on behalf of Moveable Feast in the community gives our clients the security of knowing where their next meal is coming from. Thank you for being so supportive in helping us continue this critical work in the name of health equity. |
