Need Fundraising Advice?

Take it from folks with 20 years of experience!

Lisa Harbin and Bob Atkinson of Team Atomic have been participating in Ride for the Feast for the better part of two decades.
They sat down to write some words of wisdom and help inspire new riders and teams. Thanks, Bob and Lisa!

❤Moveable Feast: What inspires YOU when you think of creative ways to raise funds for Moveable Feast?

✨Lisa and Bob: There's a lot of great causes in Baltimore for people to give their time and money to, so creativity is a necessity. When we started the team, we asked our friends at Atomic Books if we could partner with them and borrow their name, which people in town knew. That helped open doors for us to ask for fundraising support. Atomic has been a great partner, hosting events and providing raffle prizes since we started 20ish years ago.

We sell Baltimore Saltbox tee shirts, onesies, and totes because Bob helped found that art movement. Teammates who are artists designed the art on merch, which we continue to sell as a fundraiser throughout the year. Celebrate the artistic talents of those around you!

❤Moveable Feast: What advice do you have for newer teams who don't have much grassroots fundraising experience?

✨Lisa and Bob: Use your local connections when thinking about fundraising events. When we had team members in local bands, we did rock show fundraisers. Most of us live in Baltimore and are long-time patrons of many local businesses, so we organize raffles and events around those connections. The business owners know us and know Moveable Feast, so when we ask for donations, it's an easy conversation. Don't be afraid to ask for things!

❤Moveable Feast: What are 2-3 favorite fundraisers you've planned or participated in?

✨Lisa and Bob: PowerPoint Karaoke is a classic and favorite: We prepare PowerPoint presentations, and people who have never seen them have to deliver them to an audience that gets to ask questions and vote on the Most Powerful Pointer. It's sort of improv and it’s always super funny and super fun.

Rock for The Feast shows with our old house band - Secret Crush Society - and our friends' bands we're always a lot of fun.

❤Moveable Feast: For as long as you've been participating in Ride for the Feast, is there anything that surprises you year over year?

✨Lisa and Bob: You never know who the Ride's mission is going to resonate with. When working our social and personal networks, there's always people who have no connection with Baltimore or Maryland or the challenges addressed by Moveable Feast who donate. It's a bad time in the world right now and people are looking for ways to help big and small. Give people an opportunity to be generous.

❤Moveable Feast: What has inspired you to continue in your tenure as riders and fundraisers for Moveable Feast? What about Moveable Feast's mission moves you?

✨Lisa and Bob: Honestly, there's a strong amount of emotional and time management muscle memory at play for us. This is what we do from January to mid-May every year. As the climate of our culture changes, the mission of Moveable Feast is still inspiring because it's so straightforward–making sure our neighbors with serious illnesses have the food they need. It’s easy to come back year after year to support that.
