December 6th, 2022 would have been Ryan White's 51st birthday. He died at age eighteen from AIDS-related pneumonia, five years after his diagnosis at thirteen in 1984, long after doctors had predicted. Initially, the superintendent of Ryan's school barred him from returning to class under the guise that he was protecting other students. Ryan fought for his return but was taunted and shunned by community members until his family eventually moved to a more accepting town. Unfortunately, Ryan's experience was commonplace for those with an AIDS diagnosis. What made Ryan's case different was the national attention it gained. Ryan fought heroically against the stigma and for the protection of those with AIDS. After he died, the Ryan White CARES Act was signed into law, a foundation that supports Moveable Feast and organizations like ours today. |
